Building Christ's Kingdom in Colombia |
|
by Jesse Owens
It was 20 years ago (1988) that I first met Pastor Holger Ruiz in Fusagasuga, Colombia. It was an unplanned trip. My wife and I were supposed to visit a different city in Colombia, but that city was celebrating mardi gras, deterring our plans.
Myrna Wilkins, an A/G missionary, met us at the airport. She took us to the city of Fusagasuga. Meeting Myrna for the first time was a privilege for Kay and me. She is a great friend and servant of God working in Colombia and Venezuela. Myrna introduced us to Pastor Holger. At the time of our meeting, he was very discouraged. He had been serving in the city for two and a half years with minimal results. He was a recent Bible school graduate, newly married with a newborn son. The church was meeting in their house. Fusagasuga has a population of 120,000, but only 12 people were attending the church meetings.
We felt impressed to come alongside Pastor Holger and work with him for three years. We organized volunteer missionary teams (MAPS) who came and helped enlarge the church/house.
