I heard these song lyrics at the end of my time at Teen Challenge, “Here I am, made completely new through You,” and they describe the turning point in my life. When I look back, I’m amazed at the way God found me, saved me from the dark times in my life, and saved me from drug addiction, accidents, bad relationships, thoughts of suicide and profound loneliness.  I’m amazed that God forgave me of the hurt I caused others and the pain I brought on myself. I am grateful to God who has shown me a complete new way of living by leading me to Teen Challenge in August 1996. Prior to entering Teen Challenge, while I was walking with Him, I couldn’t stop drinking alcohol. It was during this time that I realized I had an addiction problem. I realized I needed help. When I arrived at Teen Challenge, I wondered if I would lose everything that was important in my life.  I earned money as a singer in show bands, musicals and advertising jingles.  Outwardly, my life appeared successful and I knew I could have done even more.  But internally, I was lonely and empty. I didn’t know who or what I actually was.  I lived under the façade of success and happiness. When I arrived at the “Schlossle” (Teen Challenge Women’s Center in Germany) everything changed. Though it seemed I had nothing, I realized I’d found EVERYTHING I needed.  Because of the loving companionship of the staff members, I found what I had been lacking. I met “little Andrea.”  She talked to me about her pain, fear and inferiority and we brought all these things together to God who replaced those feelings with joy and creativity. Teen Challenge became a haven for me. I was made new.  The staff invest themselves in a very special way into the lives of the people who are entrusted to them.  The staff showed me the way to freedom and truth by surrendering my life to God, who loves unconditionally, forgives unconditionally and who takes away the shame that lies to addicts. God granted me a new dignity. My life has not been easy, and entering a rehab Center for a year takes a lot of courage, but it has led me to who I am today. “Here I am, made completely new through You.” Matthew HulettMy name is Matthew Hulett. I grew up in a broken home where drug and alcohol use was common. At an early age, I began to rebel against any kind of authority. As a result of my disobedience, I was sent to Oregon to live with my loving, Christian grandparents. They provided regular guidelines, boundaries and discipline I had not experienced before. During my junior high school years, I was active in my local church youth group. However, I never allowed the Bible to change my life or help me to find purpose. During my freshmen year in high school, I began to smoke marijuana which led to the use of harder drugs. At age twenty, I was very disappointed with my life, and I had no hope for the future. Suicide seemed like the only escape.
I wound up in jail and my grandparents brought me a pamphlet from Teen Challenge, a faith based, non sectarian rehabilitation program. Little did I know that God was directing my life. Proverbs 21:1 says,"The king’s heart is like the channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes," and He did just that. The local Judge in Washington State, offered to release me from jail under the condition that I not only enter, but also complete the Teen Challenge program. I chose Teen Challenge.
When I arrived at Teen Challenge in WV, I experienced a love and acceptance that I had never felt before. I began to search for answers, all of which pointed to Jesus Christ. It only took me three days to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and my life has been forever changed! I learned how to live a disciplined life, how to have a relationship with God on a daily basis and I even obtained my G.E.D.
After graduating from the TC Program, I enrolled in Zion Bible College (Now Northpoint Bible College), where I continued to grow and mature. Global Renewal helped to scholarship my education at Zion. I graduated from college in 2010 and I am now married to a beautiful, God-fearing wife, Betsy, and we have a son, Levi. Presently I am serving as the Student Ministries Pastor at Hobart Assembly of God in Hobart, IN. "Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come" (2 Cor. 5:17).
